Christmas Themed Bathroom

Most people’s Christmases involve mass gatherings of families or friends which inevitably ends up in the overnight guest (or 5).  Some guests will fit into one’s home life and routine without concern, but others will need a little extra thinking about. Here’s why upgrading your bathroom with a SENSTEC Anti-Slip Shower Tray will not only ensure safe showering for the permanent residents of the home but also allow you to host all year round.

Safety That Empowers Independence

The number one goal when considering shower safety should be to empower people to shower both safely and independently for as long as possible. Most handrails in shower cubicles are to give the occupant something to hold onto while negotiating a slippery surface. This could be to catch themselves if they slip or to take away some of the weight going through the legs and instead hold one’s body weight in their arms. In both examples, the rail is trying to make you safe while in a situation that has been agreed to be unsafe.

A SENSTEC Anti-Slip Shower Tray has a different approach, make the surface you stand on consistently stable and grippy making the occupant safe and confident. A SENSTEC Anti-Slip Shower Tray works by breaking the foot’s contact with the slippery, flat bottom of the shower tray thus creating grip. When undergoing independent testing a wet and very soapy SENSTEC Tray was able to be tilted past 30 degrees without causing the user (walking up and down the tray) to slip or lose their footing.

Elegance & Practicality In Harmony

The best and most helpful technological advancements will integrate into life effortlessly and as discreetly as possible.

SENSTEC Anti-Slip Shower Trays are all made to the highest manufacturing standards, their sleek, elegant design comes in a huge range of shapes and sizes and can be made in any colour (including colour matching service). This allows your bathrooms to compromise on neither style nor safety.

Find out more about SENSTEC’s endless colour options.

Hassle-Free Maintenance

Anyone who’s ever tried to use an anti-slip paint or sticker will know how dirty they can get within weeks of installation, not to mention their diminishing effect when they become dirty traps. Now imagine trying to keep these gleaming with a house full over the already busy Christmas period. Not fun.

SENSTEC’s Anti-Slip Shower Tray was designed to be easy to clean, as confirmed by the housekeeping division in one of Ireland’s premier hotels. If they love them, we know you will when your family expect hotel service in your home. Simply put, SENSTEC has no special cleaning requirement or will it take any longer than a normal tray.

See the Dromoland Castle Case Study.

Conclusion

A SENSTEC Anti-Slip Shower Tray is an investment in safety and style for the lifetime of the tray. With no degradation to the qualities of the shower tray, there is no downsides to being prepared for what the future holds and getting your SENSTEC installed during your next bathroom.

SENSTEC will blend seamlessly into any bathroom keeping all who use it extra safe while in the shower especially those at a higher risk of slips and falls. This extra peace of mind can be achieved without compromise in design.

SENSTEC comes in 4 different shapes: square, rectangle, quadrant (a right-angled triangle with a rounded top) and offset quadrant (a rectangle with one corner rounded). To make sure the shape you want fits perfectly, SENSTEC also comes in a range of 42 different sizes.

But which is right for you?

SENSTEC 4 Variations
SENSTEC is available in 4 shapes

There isn’t a golden ratio for what size shower you should have compared to your bathroom floor space but anything over 900cm is considered a reasonable space. It’s important to consider the clearance space you’ll need for your shower enclousre door (if it hinges out into the bathroom space).

Finally deciding the function shower and where you are going to store your in-shower products can help finalise the decision made around the size and shape of your shower tray. Are you going to have a walk-in shower, will the enclosure cover the whole tray or just part and where will the shampoos be accessible will all be factors when choosing size and shape.

SQUARE

SENSTEC Square Icon

Square shower trays come in 3 sizes; 800×800, 900×900, and 1000×1000 with an additional 25mm which can be shaved off each wall-touching side to give you even more flexibility and the perfect fit.

Square shower trays are often used in the corners of bathrooms much like a quadrant-shaped tray but the square has a lot more flexibility when it comes to choosing a shower enclosure. A square tray will allow you to have sliding or hinged doors, which gives you a lot more options when it comes to deciding exactly how and where you want to enter your shower.

QUADRANT

SENSTEC Quadrant Icon

The quadrant comes in 1000 x 1000, 900 x 900, and 800 x 800, and like all SENSTEC trays, can have 25mm taken off any wall-touching side.

The Quadrant gives a much smoother line than the square tray without having the same pointed edges. The quadrant is perfect for the corner of a room and is especially great in small spaces as the rounded edge reduces the overall footprint of the tray, giving you more floor space. If you’re considering a quadrant, be sure to look at what type of shower enclosure you’d like before making your purchase as the choice can be limited compared to square or rectangular trays.

OFFSET QUADRANT

SENSTEC Offset Quadrant Icon

An offset Quadrant is a similar shape but this time it’s a rectangle with a rounded edge. A great way to elongate your showering area with a walk-in style rectangle whilst still having the smooth sweeping edge which also saves space. The offset quadrant comes in a left and right version depending on where you want the curved edge.

RECTANGLE

SENSTEC Rectangle Icon

Our most popular shape is the rectangle which comes in a huge range of sizes (see table below). This shape is great for larger or walk-in showers and, like the square, has a lot of options when it comes to enclosures.

The rectangle shape is our most popular for a few reasons. The rising popularity of replacing baths for showers has given people a lot of space in their bathrooms for large walk-in showers. People prefer these as you get the benefits of a wet room, being able to move around the shower and walk in/out of the water, while still containing any dirt or liquid in one area. The downside of being able to walk up and down the shower tray is the risk of slips and falls increases dramatically, leaving you with even more reasons to buy an anti-slip shower tray.

Summary

In summary, SENSTEC offers 4 distinctive shower tray shapes: square, quadrant, offset quadrant and rectangle, all available in various sizes for a precise fit in your bathroom.

The square tray provides design flexibility, accommodating sliding or hinged doors for convenient shower access. The quadrant, with its rounded edges, optimizes space, making it ideal for compact bathrooms and corners with the offset quadrangle elongating two sides to make the shape more rectangular for a more ‘walk-in’ style shower.

Our most popular option, the rectangle, comes in a wide range of sizes, perfect for spacious or walk-in showers. However, do consider the risk of slips and falls, emphasizing the need for a SENSTEC Anti-Slip Shower Tray for added safety and peace of mind.

Love At First Shower

After over 40 years of manufacturing shower trays for the UK and Ireland, Classic Marble shipped to the States for the first time after impressing an American couple staying at one of Ireland’s 5-star castle resorts. We caught up with Kim to find out why this nurse decided that SENSTEC was the right choice for her home.

“I first became aware of SENSTEC when I stayed at Dromoland Castle for a friend’s wedding, we all flew over from Maine. I’d been looking for a product to help with the house planning that was going to be low entry and safe. I was able to stay there, at the castle, and use the product for 5 days. I was really pleased with it, so much so, that before we left, I did take my cell phone camera into the shower to take a picture of the name of the company.”

This was Kim Noble’s first impression of SENSTEC over a year ago. She went on to contact SENSTEC and they pulled out all the stops to make sure she got the tray she was clearly in love with.

A Certified Senior Home Safety Specialist Opinion.

“The most special thing for me” Continues Kim. “Is that I’m a registered nurse, (as well as a Certified Senior Home Safety Specialist) which means safety is the most important thing in the shower. I guess the biggest test was using soap and conditioning products whilst in the shower because I never felt unsteady on my feet in there. I never felt […] unstable or risk a fall for using products we all use every day in our showers and that was really a big selling point for me.”

Last week Christopher Hackett, MD, Classic Marble (makers of SENSTEC) accepted an invitation to the ‘Aging in Place Open House’ and flew out to Maine to meet Kim and see for himself the first SENSTEC tray installed in America.

Christopher and Kim at home in Maine.

Kim said, “For myself and my husband, being from the States, we did contact SENSTEC to question if the product would be available. The promptness of the response was absolutely incredible. I know we have to convert from meters to feet but that part was very simple. Then obtaining the product, through international means, for us it was very simple. Communication I have to say was one of the best things as well.”

Christopher was able to view not only the bathroom but the whole home which has been made to allow people to ‘Age in Place’. With all that said, was SENSTEC the star of the show?

5 Months Of Trust In SENSTEC

The Noble’s plan was to invest in products like SENSTEC so they get the advantages of the product today, as well as having safe showering for many years to come. With this in mind, Christopher needed to find out if they still loved the product as much after living with it for 5 months.

“With SENSTEC, safety is the first selling point for me with the experience we had. When we obtained the product and we learnt how easy it was to clean it was like an even bigger bonus. It’s so simple to keep clean. When using SENSTEC the feel on our feet is unbelievable it’s very comfortable, kind of feels like I’m giving my feet a little massage when I’m using it.” Finished Kim.

Kim’s house was open to the public for anyone wanting to learn about how to prepare your home for ‘Aging in Place’, more information on this can be found in Lisa M.Cini’s ‘BOOM’- The Baby Boomers Guide to Preserving Your Freedom and Thriving as You Age in Place.

Classic Marble: Where it all began

When Donald Hackett came into contact with synthetic marble while building skyscrapers in Australia, he had no idea that it would be the beginning of a 40-year legacy.

Surrounded by the green hills of County Tyrone, The Classic Marble Factory provides a great place to work for local people and exports its award-winning products across the UK, Europe and America.

Classic Marble initially gained prominence among bathroom installers in ROI and NI. Each Classic Marble tray is meticulously handcrafted and inspected, creating products that are installed with ease, making it a firm favourite among installers.

Over the years, Donald continued to innovate his designs and manufacturing processes, helping Classic Marble remain relevant as an increasing number of mass-produced shower trays entered the market. In contrast to vacuum-formed acrylic Classic Marble pours its resin compound into moulds. This approach enabled Classic Marble to possess another distinguishing feature – custom-colour shower trays.

Many of 1990’s team members still work at Classic Marble today.

With Classic Marble producing impeccably accurate custom-colour shower trays, Donald’s focus shifted towards a universal challenge for all bathroom installers (aside from crooked trays, of course). Leaks! More specifically, leaks caused by settlement cracks or subsidence.

A Classi Addition

Time and again, bathrooms in newly constructed structures would begin to leak a few years after the building’s completion. Donald could see that if the shower or bath waterproofing was able to flex and move with the house as it settled, it would stop this kind of leak altogether. Thus, Classi Seal was born.

Classi Stand at NMBS'23

The Classi stand tours the UK and Ireland.

Classi made a significant impact as soon as it entered the market, with a broader range of sizes as its initial expansion. Within the coming years, Classi Plus (a version of Classi compatible with paint-on waterproof membrane) and Classi Neutral Cure 100% Silicone will be added to the product list. Finally, customers wanted to buy everything they needed in one place, so the Classi Waterproofing Kits were made.

SENSTEC: The Next Generation

The next bathroom innovation arose from another pressing issue: slips and falls within bathrooms. By this point, Donald’s sons, Christopher and Stephen, had joined the business, working in tandem to create SENSTEC.

SENSTEC started out as an interesting design project. Could you make a shower tray that has top-level anti-slip while still being comfortable to stand on and easy to keep clean? Well, after nearly 5 years of research and development and over 40 prototypes, the Hacketts answered that question – yes, you can!

SENSTEC Prototypes

A collection of samples made while researching and developing SENSTEC.

SENSTEC has gained extensive recognition within the KBB industry (kitchen, bedroom, bathroom), even securing the FSB NI award for innovation in 2022, competing against groundbreaking AI software and other highly innovative inventions.

The core of SENSTEC lies in its patented design. SENSTEC features hundreds of small protrusions that come up from the flat bottom of the tray, breaking the foot’s contact with the floor and providing vast amounts of grip. Each of these has to be precisely shaped and placed to achieve the perfect balance between comfort and safety while avoiding trapping dirt.

These protrusions were nicknamed ‘Dimples,’ a reference back to our manufacturing process and what makes Classic Marble uniquely qualified to create SENSTEC.

Remember the moulds that have been used for crafting the original Classic Marble trays since the 80s? Well, it is Classic Marble’s mastery of the moulding process that enabled us to create SENSTEC. Each mould is meticulously created, with perfectly sculpted dimples that, when filled, would become the grip or ‘Dimples’ on a SENSTEC tray.

Having weathered the challenges posed by COVID-19 in 2020, Classic Marble and its associated brands continue to grow. The most recent addition is the slate effect trays – Classic M Slate – a driving force propelling Classic Marble into the future.

Thank You

To celebrate the 40th year of Classic Marble, Christopher Hackett MD, decided to take the whole team Rally Driving. Tools were set aside, answer phones activated, and the team assembled for a morning of enjoyment.

The Classic Marble Team in 2023

Despite the team’s relentless efforts to prevent skids and slips in bathrooms, the same principles can’t be readily applied on the racetrack. Cars slid, tyres squealed, brakes smoked, and cheers rang out. It was a rare occasion where the whole team could be photographed together. This encompasses salespeople from across the UK and Ireland, the office team who work at home and on-site, the factory team who contribute to all the Classic Marble brands, and even a surprise visit from one team member still on maternity leave, celebrating the arrival of their new baby to the world.

Classic Marble would like to take this opportunity to express gratitude to everyone we work with day-to-day – our steadfast suppliers and valued customers. We’d also like to thank the people who install Classi or shower with SENSTEC, the showroom staff advocating for the benefits of SENSTEC on our behalf, and the project managers who insist on Classi’s use in every bathroom project. The broader KBB industry united in camaraderie during awards nights and social media takeovers, commands our respect and gratitude. We also acknowledge all the unsung heroes who contribute to the vibrant tapestry of Classic Marble’s legacy.

Thank you.

When you’re in the market for an anti-slip shower tray, the lack of comprehensive information can leave you uncertain about what is an anti-slip shower tray and how to choose the right type. Understanding what anti-slip is and its significance can help you make an informed decision for a safer showering experience.

Defining Anti-Slip:

Anti-slip refers to a design specifically crafted to prevent slipping or to remain stationary. In the context of shower trays, this feature becomes crucial to avoid slips and falls during a shower, considering the inherent slipperiness of the shower environment.

What is an Anti-Slip Shower Tray:

Anti-slip shower trays are designed with either a specially applied coating or an integrated anti-slip design to enhance safety (Read more about this here). Their purpose is to prevent accidents caused by the slippery conditions created during a shower and the use of products in the process. Choosing an anti-slip shower tray is a proactive step towards preventing slips and falls, especially for vulnerable individuals or those seeking a secure and worry-free showering experience.

A SENSTEC Anti-Slip Shower Tray makes a bathroom a safer place to shower.
A SENSTEC Anti-Slip Shower Tray makes a bathroom a safer place to shower.

Regulations and Standards for Anti-Slip Shower Trays:

In Europe, for domestic purposes, traditional shower trays must adhere to specific manufacturing standard regulations, notably the CE marking in compliance with EN 14527. However, when it comes to ‘anti-slip’ shower trays, there are no further mandatory regulations or standardised testing procedures, which can lead to a confusing buying experience.

The Challenge with Marketed ‘Anti-Slip’ Trays:

The absence of standardised regulations means that any shower tray can be advertised as “anti-slip”. This unfortunate reality highlights the importance of being well-informed and discerning when selecting the right anti-slip shower tray for your needs.

SENSTEC’s Integrated Anti-Slip Design:

At SENSTEC, we have taken a different approach to ensure that our anti-slip shower tray genuinely delivers on its promise. Our design incorporates anti-slip properties directly into the tray during the manufacturing process, rather than relying on an applied coating. The integration of “dimples” within the tray ensures that the anti-slip properties will remain effective for the entire lifespan of the shower tray. This is just one of the advantages of a SENSTEC Anti-Slip Shower Tray. Our product was developed through years of research to achieve the perfect combination of dimple shape and spacing. Only when we achieved exceptional anti-slip performance while maintaining effortless cleaning and comfort underfoot were we satisfied with the design. (Read more about cleaning anti-slip here)

Consistency and Reliability:

SENSTEC trays are shaped in a mould and made by hand, ensuring that each tray is identical. Following completion, each SENSTEC tray undergoes an in-depth inspection process to meet our high standards.

This consistency ensures that a new SENSTEC tray will have the same anti-slip properties as when it was 1, 3, or 10 years old. In addition, our dimples are designed to allow dirt to be carried away with the water, preventing them from becoming slippery. So, as long as the tray is cleaned like a normal tray, its anti-slip effectiveness will not diminish.

Putting SENSTEC to the Test:

At SENSTEC, we don’t solely rely on our claims; we subject our products to rigorous testing. Our anti-slip shower tray successfully underwent both the Pendulum and Barefoot Ramp tests.

In the Pendulum test, a score of 36 indicates a 1 in 1 million chance of slipping. SENSTEC achieved an average score of 48, an off-the-scale result, earning the design a spot in the Low Slip Potential category. (Read more about the Pendulum Test here)

Similarly, the Barefoot Ramp test requires a score of 24 degrees for the best classification (Category C). SENSTEC surpassed this requirement, recording an average of 30 degrees, further validating the effectiveness of our anti-slip properties. (Read more about the German Ramp Test here)

Summary:

Anti-Slip shower trays offer the best, least intrusive way to make your showering easier and safer. They come in many forms, varying in price and level of maintenance, but any type of anti-slip can improve your showering experience if properly maintained.

Adding stickers, paints, or mats to the tray after manufacture is a quick fix, but they will require reapplication/replacement and must be kept clean to avoid slipperiness, which is a time-consuming process.

Building the anti-slip into the tray is a more reliable, consistent solution that would involve fitting a new tray.

When choosing, consider the “Barefoot Ramp Test,” arguably the best test for evaluating the effectiveness of an anti-slip. If the tray you’re considering lacks a test rating, consider why that might be.

As a benchmark, SENSTEC has barefoot ramp test results of 30 degrees. Also, think about how easy the solution will be to maintain; if it appears that dirt and grime could get trapped, then this will become unsightly and, in turn, become slippery.

When the prestigious 5-star Irish hotel, Dromoland Castle, decided to enhance its guest experience with SENSTEC Anti-slip Shower Trays in 2020, little did they know that it would pave the way for SENSTEC to sell into the USA for the first time.

Focusing on guest safety and comfort, Dromoland Castle sought top-quality shower trays that would provide unparalleled safety measures, ensuring their guests felt secure throughout their stay. With equal importance placed on easy cleanability to address the challenges of maintaining anti-slip surfaces, the hotel aimed to seamlessly integrate these features into their luxurious 5-star en-suites. SENSTEC proved to be the perfect solution, exceeding expectations.

Fast forward a few years, when an American couple, the Nobles, embarked on a well-deserved vacation in Ireland and chose to stay at Dromoland Castle. Their encounter with SENSTEC would change everything. (Visit the Dromoland Castle Hotel website here)

Drumoland 5 Star Castle Hotel

Kim Noble, recounting their experience, said, “SENSTEC left a lasting impression on us, which is saying something during such an exciting vacation. The comfort of the tray while showering was remarkable. The dimples underfoot felt amazing to stand on, and it became evident when I moved around that those dimples were providing remarkable support. Despite the suds and movement, my feet remained securely anchored to the tray. SENSTEC doesn’t just passively ensure safety; it actively reassures you. This discovery truly broadened our perspective on available options.”

SENSTEC to sell into the USA for the first time.

Inspired by their delightful experience, the Nobles embarked on a home renovation journey, where SENSTEC became a priority. “Maine, where we reside, has an ageing population, and we embrace the ‘Aging in Place’ concept, designing homes to cater to our needs beyond retirement. SENSTEC ensures a long-lasting, safe showering experience,” added Kim Noble.

Eager to have SENSTEC in their home, the Nobles contacted SENSTEC via Instagram to explore the possibility of shipping a tray to the USA.

“At first, we were uncertain about facilitating the tray delivery, but deeply touched by their story and feedback, we were determined to make it happen. As shower trays are relatively uncommon in the USA, it was a learning experience for all parties involved,” shared Christopher Hackett, SENSTEC’s Managing Director.

Maintaining close communication throughout the process, Kim and Christopher exchanged updates on the handcrafted tray, showcasing SENSTEC’s dedication to their customers.

After overcoming shipping, packaging, and other logistical challenges, SENSTEC successfully dispatched the tray to the US. Enduring two snowstorms, multiple transportation modes including lorries, trains, and boats, the tray finally arrived in Maine, to await installation.

SENSTEC’s journey from an Irish 5-star hotel to the shores of America is a testament to the company’s commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction. Dromoland Castle and the Nobles have proven that SENSTEC’s innovation transcends borders, delivering safety and comfort wherever it finds a home.

Can’t find the answer you’re looking for?

It’s hard when buying a new bathroom to find the right balance between value vs luxury as well beauty vs safety. This normally leaves buyers confronted with the question ‘Is an anti-slip shower tray worth it?’. Here is why we think it is worth your hard earned money.

Types of anti-slip shower trays and their advantages:

The two main types of anti-slip shower trays are those with integrated anti-slip properties and those with an applied coating.

On an integrated anti-slip tray, the anti-slip properties are built directly into the tray, ensuring they do not degrade over time or with use. This creates a dependable level of anti-slip that you can rely on, particularly in commercial settings where consistency is crucial.

Applied coatings are used on shower trays after the manufacturing process, with paint or stickers being the most prevalent options. These coatings are often inexpensive and can be applied even after the shower tray is installed. But they aren’t without their issues. Regular reapplication is necessary, creating an inconsistency in the expected level of anti-slip performance on a day-to-day basis.

Timing is everything

Which route to go?

For a lot of people, that decision will have already been made for them. If a shower tray is already installed, replacing the tray isn’t a cost-effective option and the only other route to safer showering is with an applied coating. Keeping them clean can be time-consuming or often impossible and reapplication will be needed from time to time, but anything is better than slipping.

If a bathroom is being remodelled, there’s a lot more options out there. Installing a shower tray with an integrated system would give a higher standard of anti-slip which would last the lifetime of the tray. An integrated anti-slip will be a premium, but the tray will give better anti-slip properties with less of the drawbacks associated with an applied coating.

Showing the worth of an anti-slip shower tray. A luxury bathroom with a SENSTEC anti-slip shower tray.
A SENSTEC Anti-Slip Shower Tray – Safe & Stylish

Conclusion, Is An Anti-Slip Shower Tray Worth It:

For most people, wanting an anti-slip tray comes after an event that made us feel unsafe in the shower, that could be a near miss while showering, a friend who fell or an injury that’s changed our confidence on our feet.

To make a current bathroom safe again, the only options are buying a sticker, anti-slip paint or any other applied coating in order to add grip to the surface.

When remodelling a bathroom, that’s when the real choice can be made. If feeling safe in the shower is of the utmost importance, allocating a larger budget to the shower tray will allow for a top-of-the-range anti-slip solution. Providing safety and confidence with none of the drawbacks, like reapplying or being difficult cleaning. If the budget doesn’t allow for this, or the priorities lie elsewhere, then an allied coating can bridge the gap between a fully integrated anti-slip shower tray and a basic tray.
